Rusticatio Australiana 2018
July 16, 2018 @ 12:00 pm - July 20, 2018 @ 1:00 pm
Over the years SALVI has had several participants make the long journey from Australia to the United States for a taste of the Latin community that a rusticatio offers – now SALVI is trying to bring that magic directly to Australia. Please join us for this extraordinary opportunity to speak and learn Latin in a spectacular, secluded rustic location in Australia.
When: Rusticatio Australiana will take place July 16th-20th, 2018.
Where: Rusticatio Australiana will be held less than two hours away from Sydney and Canberra in Kangaroo Valley, at the Kangaroo Valley Bush Retreat, which features gorgeous natural scenery and ample creature comforts.
What is Rusticatio like? SALVI’s rusticationes seek to combine high-level language learning with comfortable, secluded settings which stimulate curiosity, camaraderie, and (ultimately) language acquisition. The seclusion of the site offers the opportunity to experience a complete immersion in the Latin language – once the event begins, participants will be exposed to twenty-four hours a day of Latin. The beauty of the location allows participants to enjoy their time away from academic activities and quietly commune with nature or enjoy time with other participants. Each day contains a full schedule of classroom lessons, readings from various Latin sources, games, meal preparation, communal meals, and ample free time for private study, exercise, relaxing, or conversing. The result is a uniquely powerful academic and personal experience.
What are the requirements? Rusticatio Australiana is open to high school graduates 18 years of age or older who have already acquired the basic rudiments of the Latin language (the equivalent of two years of high school Latin, or two semesters at a university). Rusticatio requires some degree of mastery of the forms of Latin and is not intended as an introduction to Latin. However, NO PREVIOUS SPOKEN LATIN IS REQUIRED. The Rusticatio Australiana curriculum has been especially designed for Latin students without experience speaking, to help them develop an “active,” i.e. oral and aural, command of the ancient tongue.
Need some evidence? Take a look at the testimonials previous participants have written about their rusticationes in the United States:
“Everyone who has even the smallest interest in learning to speak the Latin language should experience a week of Rusticatio. The amount one learns in a single week here is immeasurable.”
“There is no professional development more useful to teachers of Latin. The experience is profound and superlatively useful and applicable.”
“Rusticatio is the best way to learn spoken Latin.”
“Rusticatio has changed my life – it was such an awesome experience. It not only enriched me as a person and increased my love of Latin (I didn’t know that was possible), but it gave me ideas to improve my teaching and I have taught Latin for 33 years now. Who says that you can’t teach an old dog new tricks?”
