Rusticatio Tironum 2017
June 30 @ 6:00 pm - July 6 @ 12:00 pm
Rusticatio Tironum is a full-immersion Latin workshop offering high-energy conversation exercises and readings from Latin literature. In a supportive, intimidation-free environment, Rusticatio Tironum participants live together for seven days while they speak, read, cook and relax—all while communicating entirely in Latin. Through a variety of exchanges, including instructional sessions, a common kitchen, daily shared tasks, downtime, and excellent food, participants in Rusticatio Tironum enjoy a feeling of camaraderie while they experience first-hand various teaching methods that are directly applicable to teaching Latin in the classroom.
“Rusticatio is the best way to learn spoken Latin.”
“Everyone who has even the smallest interest in learning to speak the Latin language should experience a week of Rusticatio. The amount one learns in a single week here is immeasurable.”
“There is no professional development more useful to teachers of Latin. The experience is profound and superlatively useful and applicable.”

June 30 – July 6, 2017
- ARRIVAL: Friday, June 30, 3:00–6:00 p.m.
- DEPARTURE: Thursday, July 6, 12:00–3:00 p.m.
Location: We will reside and conduct our workshop sessions in the historic mansion house on the Claymont Estate, 667 Huyett Road, Charles Town, WV, 25414. Built in the 1830s by a nephew of George Washington, the Claymont Mansion remained in the Washington family until the Civil War. For directions please visit the Claymont website.
Eligibility: You are eligible to attend this workshop if you have already learned Latin on paper and are interested in developing active command of the spoken language. Please note that Rusticatio is not an introductory Latin course and thus it is not for people who have no knowledge of the language. Typically, participants have completed, at a minimum, the equivalent of two years of traditional college Latin or four years of a high school Latin program. It is not necessary to have previous experience speaking Latin. If you are unsure of whether Rusticatio Tironum is for you, please explore the summer program comparison chart.
Age Eligibility: Participants must be 18 years old and have graduated from high school by the start date of the program. We are proud to invite high school students to apply for our SALVI summer experience aimed at that age group: Academia Aestiva.
Cost: If you register before April 1, 2017, tuition for Rusticatio Tironum 2017 is $990. The price includes housing as well as all food and beverages, including wine, but not transportation to or from Claymont Estate. All it takes to reserve your spot is a $100 fully-refundable deposit and completion of the online application below. After April 1, the program costs $1090. Even once you’ve paid in full, 100% of your payment is refundable if you cancel by June 1, 2017. You may pay through PayPal using the button below, or by sending a check payable to SALVI to the provided address. Many schools in the past have provided funding for their teachers to attend this event.
John Byron Kuhner (Ioannes Capillatus) has been speaking Latin for more than twenty years, since studying with Reginald Foster in Rome in 1995. After graduating from Princeton he began teaching at both the high school and elementary school levels, in New York, New Jersey, and Arizona. For SALVI he has taught at multiple Rusticationes as well as Biduum Virginianum, and is the head instructor for Biduum Noveboracense 2017. He was also an instructor at the first-ever Latin immersion program in South Africa in 2015, and at Paideia’s Living Latin in Rome in 2016. He is the current president of SALVI.
