I made more progress than I expected. It not only enriched me as a person and increased my love of Latin (I didn\u2019t know that was possible), but it gave me ideas to improve my teaching and I have taught Latin for 33 years now. The meals were well thought-out, prepared, and tasty.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>What did you like BEST? \u201cThe high level of the teachers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u2013<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cI didn\u2019t know what to expect. I supposed I didn\u2019t expect such a breadth of Latinity; Latin could be spoken in diverse and compelling circumstances.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou guys are weird. This place is weird. It\u2019s not clear what we\u2019re doing, but, perhaps stupidly, I love it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u2013<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis experience most definitely exceeded my expectations. I really did not think I would be able to make it through the week. But everyone was so amicable and patient. It was a glorious week.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI loved our reading sessions. I never thought I would be able to follow a conversation in Latin about Latin. But I did and Thomas patiently explained matters when I did not.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe best thing was the kindness, the delightful kindness of everyone. And \u2013 next \u2013 how everything was put together.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u2013<\/p>\n<p>\u201cExceeded expectations. The kindness and efforts that were poured into our learning and living experiences made this week unique and unforgettable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>The best thing overall was&#8230; \u201cThe passion of the people. Passion to teach, to learn, to enjoy life. It was all here.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wish I had the resources to fund SALVI, so it could multiply greatly. Since I lack that, I will certainly be singing its praises to some who might.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cThank you for the opportunity to share this special week with so many awesome people. Latinitas is in good hands. Because I am the only Latin teacher at my school \u2013 this experience has been like rain in the desert. I am sure the blossoms will appear repeatedly from this week.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u2013<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe kindness, patience, helpfulness, enthusiasm, and generosity of the volunteer staff was beyond expectation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u2013<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe location is awesome, the food was wonderful and nearly available, I love all the goofy drawings used to illustrate things. The schedule was really great with structured time and free time. I knew it would be great but I forgot how wonderful it would be to be here again inter amicos.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI really liked that the class exercises would lead into the readings we do in small groups. I liked how we were separated in lots of different groups so we had lots of time to talk with each other and meet each other.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>What did you like LEAST? \u201cLeaving.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The best thing overall was&#8230; \u00a0\u201cThe constant presence of Latin speakers willing to repeat themselves and rephrase things so I could better understand the stories, the friendship, the food, the wine, the maenianum.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cRusticatio is absolutely the best way to improve your understanding of and ability to speak in Latin, and you will make great friendships with wonderful colleagues at the same time.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u2013<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe support of the staff was boundless.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cExceeded expectations in all ways.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMethods modeled could be used in the classroom easily.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Best thing about this course was&#8230; \u201cThe friendships and collegiality.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u2013<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI came in anxious and was pleasantly surprised at how little there was to fear.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cThe event staff has endless patience and kindness. Their willingness to teach whenever and wherever throughout the day, especially outside the classroom, is remarkable and something I hope to imitate.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u2013<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cThe house reminded me of \u2018Gone with the Wind.\u2019\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The best thing overall was \u2026 \u201cThe structure and flexibility and welcoming\/convivial atmosphere.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u2013<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cI never thought I could speak in Latin only for a week. Now I don\u2019t want to leave.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u2013<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is very useful to learn names for everyday things. They occur in the authors, but so rarely that I never remember them. I have learned so much and I know that there is still so much to learn.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>What did you like best? \u201cHow awesome everyone was in listening and helping me (and others) in understanding and speaking Latin. And just as\u00a0importantly you will meet many amazing people who love Latin as much as you, and you\u2019ll have\u00a0great fun and eat great food all week.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBeyond anything I imagined\u2014so much easier to speak in Latin than I thought.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u2013<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI can\u2019t describe, in any language, how it exceeded my expectations.\u201d \u201cI\u2019m not trying to be\u00a0difficult\u2014I really don\u2019t know how this course could improve.\u201d\u00a0\u201cIt is possible to come to Rusticatio Tironum to learn to understand spoken Latin and even to\u00a0speak it after having never before studied the language.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u2013<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019d recommend this experience to anyone, classicist, teacher, or student who loves Latin and\u00a0Rome. Venite!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u2013<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cI learned so much more than I ever thought I could in a week.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u2013<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEveryone was patient and helpful and was willing to answer my question and help me out.\u201d \u201cCan\u00a0I put that I liked everything and then leave it there?\u201d \u201cI can\u2019t imagine a better way to spend a week,\u00a0or a more amazing group to speak Latin with!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u2013<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI liked the sessions of reading only in Latin best, and feeling that I understand the literature as\u00a0well as if it were English.\u201d <strong>\u201cAll people that want the classical languages to survive should really be\u00a0doing these kinds of courses.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u2013<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI realized how important \u201ccommunity \u00adbuilding\u201d is to the learning process, something I wasn\u2019t\u00a0anticipating to take away.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u2013<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was amazed how high my comprehension was and how confident I felt, which was certainly on\u00a0account of Justin [Bailey]\u2019s amazing teaching style.\u201d \u201cI can\u2019t say how much it meant to me to be able to\u00a0have a place where I knew I could express my creativity and ideas in Latin.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u2013<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI learned so much that I will use in the classroom.\u201d \u201c<strong>Rusticatio is the best way to learn spoken\u00a0Latin.<\/strong> Everyone is so helpful and supportive, and we all had a great time. The activities will be\u00a0used often in my classroom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u2013<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI had no idea how much I could learn in one week.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u2013<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTerrific experience. <strong>Being immersed was hugely helpful in making Latin part of me, not just\u00a0something I study.<\/strong>\u201d \u201cThere is no professional development more useful to teachers of Latin. Now, I\u00a0indubitably believe that, as many said this week, Latin is a language \u2013 to be written, read, and\u00a0spoken like any other.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI learned so much through so many different exercises and this truly has been a magnificent\u00a0experience.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u2013<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cThis program has totally rekindled my love of the Latin language.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u2013<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere really wasn\u2019t anything I disliked about the program. Even the kitchen duty was a\u00a0wonderful experience.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u2013<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cEveryone who has even the smallest interest in learning to speak the Latin language should\u00a0experience a week of Rusticatio. The amount one learns in a single week here is immeasurable.\u00a0The teachers and participants are extremely encouraging and patient.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u2013<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt felt like a giant Latin\u00ad-speaking family. I loved it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI will most definitely be coming back. I\u2019m actually sad about leaving. <strong>Everyone is amazing,\u00a0patient, and overall loving.<\/strong> <strong>I have never laughed so much with the same people for seven days\u00a0straight before.<\/strong>\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u2013<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI spent many years studying Latin and now almost the same number teaching. Within the last few\u00a0years, I really became discontented teaching Latin. For this reason, I spent time learning Italian to\u00a0the point where I could teach it, because I grew weary of teaching the same worn things in the\u00a0class. I wanted to be able to enjoy being in another language and this was not possible for me in\u00a0Latin. This year, I attended a Biduum and now Rusticatio. <strong>I feel so much more connected to Latin\u00a0than I have in 15 years.<\/strong> For me, Latin was a medium through which I enjoyed spending time with\u00a0dear friends. This was lost for me, but I am confident that I am on the road to finding this joy\u00a0again. These experiences have been seminal in the process.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u2013<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy expectations were very high, and it met all of them perfectly \u2013 to have community, to speak\u00a0Latin, and to learn so much in a place of beauty.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRusticatio is the best place on earth.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u2013<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cThe highlight of my Latin study thus far.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8212;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvery year the experience exceeds all my expectations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u2013<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cThe amount of care, thought, hilarity, erudition, and effort with which everyone in SALVI and\u00a0Claymont work is incomparable.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u2013<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cLiving in a <em>Latine tantum<\/em> environment helps one exponentially in his\/her command of the\u00a0language.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u2013<\/p>\n<p>The one area most in need of improvement in this course was: \u201cleaving shouldn\u2019t be mandatory.\u201d \u00a0\u201cThe people make this worth doing. You will never get the practice with a more wonderful\u00a0group.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u2013<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe teachers were great and the food was amazing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u2013<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMirabile \u2013 <em>vos valde magnopere multo sine fine amo<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u2013<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t realize how totally mind\u00adbending the immersive experience would be.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cYou don\u2019t realize what a total mind\u00adbody experience being immersed in a language will be \u2013 it\u00a0sounds melodramatic but is nonetheless true.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u2013<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cI think I finally understand how I can use spoken Latin in my classroom.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI look forward to this event every year. I\u2019m going to keep coming back as many times as I can.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u2013<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe balance of classroom lessons, readings, and informal discussions seemed perfect.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201c[The best thing about this course was] The gentleness with which participants were encouraged\u00a0simply to do their best. It truly made Latin click and brought it to life.
