A circle of people stand outside in front of a historic building and cluster of trees, listening to a man speak.

SALVI (Septentrionale Americanum Latinitatis Vivae Institutum, or North American Institute for Living Latin Studies) is pleased to present Biduum Pennsylvaniense, a three-day, two-night Latin immersion weekend workshop.  Join us at the beautiful Pendle Hill retreat center, which boasts stately stone buildings, rambling paths, ponds, and 140 species of diverse trees and shrubs. This Biduum allows participants to experience a communal atmosphere with other Latin speakers in an immersion setting.  For tirones, or those who have little to no experience speaking Latin, this Biduum is a way to whet your spoken Latin whistle, without the commitment of a week-long Rusticatio. For Rusticatio or Biduum alumni, this Biduum is a great mid-year Latin boost!  But most importantly, for all involved, this Biduum provides access to a community of Latin learners and educators, as well as a sense of fellowship and a nurturing atmosphere.

Program Dates: April 11-13, 2025

  • Arrival: Friday, April 11, between 3:00 and 6:00 in the evening.
  • Departure: Sunday, April 13, between 11:00 and 12:00 in the afternoon.

Program Instructors

  • Andrew Morehouse (Andreas) graduated from UMass Amherst in 2015 and 2017 with a BA in Classics and MAT in Latin and Classical Humanities respectively and nurtured there his love for teaching Latin and ancient Greek. He began speaking Latin in 2016 with Paideia at Living Latin in Rome where he was immediately inflamed with the desire to speak Latin just about every day. Each day since, he has spent a great deal of his time learning and understanding how to speak better, read better, and better grapple with the texts of the ancient world and the ancient world itself. This led him to SALVI with which he has been involved since 2018, serving as an instructor, sodalis, dux, and member of the board of directors. He currently runs Latinitas Animi Causa alongside his wife, Ilse, ubi linguae “mortuae” vivescunt! He loves making content in Latin and ancient Greek via podcasts and YouTube videos, and live streaming playing video games in Latin on Twitch. He also currently teaches Latin, ancient Greek, and Spanish at the Woodstock Academy in CT. Outside the Latin/Greek world, he enjoys doing archery, playing guitar, singing, photography, and reading in his spare time, when he can find it.
  • Catherine Reed (Catherina) was born and raised in Maryland, and loves all the culture that the Baltimore area has to offer.  She has hosted scavenger hunts for her students at the Walters Art Museum there, amongst the mummies and Greek pottery. She also enjoys indulging her interest in botany and scientific Latin during her frequent walks at Baltimore’s Cylburn Arboretum. Catherine is the co-creator and co-host of the Latin cooking podcast “Secunda Mensa”, and she has also co-hosted the Latin podcast “Quomodo Dicitur?” Catherine loves singing, playing, and talking in Latin with her middle school students at Loyola Blakefield in Baltimore County. She has a Masters in the Art of Teaching, is a SALVI Board Member, and is a frequent instructor and organizer of SALVI Bidua and Rusticationes.
  • John Young (Johannes Juvenalis) is a longtime SALVI participant and staff member. His first Rusticatio was in 2009, and he served as President of SALVI from 2019-2023. It may sound dramatic, but it is true, nonetheless: SALVI immersion events changed the course of his life. Johannes teaches Latin and other Classics courses at the Browning School and at Hunter College in NYC. He is a PhD candidate in Classics at the CUNY Graduate Center. He and his family live in the Catskill mountains, in Woodstock, NY.
