“Even if you say nothing all week, they will still love you.”
~ Cori “Corradus” Russo
On my first night at Claymont Mansion, I sat on the back porch, getting to know a few of the people I would spend the next week with. As we spoke, one of them mentioned that they knew I was the Amy High Fellowship recipient for 2018. I shared some of my concerns for the upcoming week. I was nervous that I was not worthy or would not live up to the expectations of the committee that had chosen me for such an honor. I studied Latin in what would be considered a traditional manner–through grammar and translation. Could I really speak only Latin for an entire week? Would I know or remember the vocabulary I needed to communicate? Did I even know that vocabulary? What would happen if I couldn’t do it? Would the committee think they gave the fellowship to the wrong person?
The response I received: “Even if you say nothing all week, they will still love you.” At that moment, I did not understand how true that was. As the week started, I struggled at first to understand all that was said to me, and to respond with anything of substance. But I also realized that the instructors and participants were ready for this. They were patient, encouraging, accepting, and eager to help me in any way. Likewise, when I did know or understand something better than another participant, I became the one who was patient, flexible, supportive, and helpful.
In the week that followed, I heard and spoke more Latin than I ever imagined. My Latin improved in ways I did not expect. I had conversations on a variety of topics and learned so much. Within a few days I found my reading skills improving, even as I was still struggling to find the vocabulary I needed while speaking. No one expected me to sound like Cicero, and no one cared that I spoke like a three year old. Every day, I was built up and never torn down. Even if I was confused or didn’t understand, both participants and instructors supported me in my learning at all times. I left West Virginia with at least 30 new friends who continue to support me and answer my questions as needed.
As I begin my 2018-2019 school year, I am taking my Rusticatio experiences into consideration. My classroom is different, my lesson plans are better, and my excitement level is higher than it has been in years. My greatest hope is to show my students the kindness I experienced at Rusticatio, and to be more accepting, patient, understanding, flexible, and supportive.
If you have the opportunity to attend a SALVI event, I cannot recommend it enough. If you are worried about your skill level, or you are concerned that you may be judged because others there know more spoken Latin than you, please know that even if you say nothing at all, they will still love you.
